Mid Lincs A League Play Off Final
2nd May 2010
Gonerby u9  2.0 Ruston Sports A
Gonerby are the under 9 A league champions after a hard fought win on sunday at Woodhall Spa against Ruston Sports, thats the league and cup double the first time in the clubs history what a great achievement for all the lads.Having won 4.3 on friday night against Rustons to force the play off we new we were in for another hard game and so it proved. With the wind at our backs in the first half we new we had to push forward and try and get in front at the interval but Rustons were defending very well and not giving Alex Geeson any space to work his magic up front.Even though they were attacking into the wind Rustons created early chances and a free kick just went over the bar and then Luke Papworth was fast off his line to clear some danger.Liam Clamp and Keaton Spray were great at the back for Gonerby and they defended very well and with Lewis Daff and Lewis Brady working hard in midfield we looked very strong. The break through came in the 20 minute as Alex Geeson was fouled outside the area and up stepped Liam Clamp to fire the ball home with the help of a little deflection.Gonerby nearly went 2 up as good work from Nathan Lane found Benjamin Barretto but his shot was blocked. At the interval Gonerby led 1.0 but now had to face the wind.
The second half was how we expected it to be as Ruston pushed forward putting Gonerby under lots of pressure.Rustons hit the post and bar in the first 10 minutes with long range efforts and then Luke Papworth made 2 good saves to keep Gonerby in the lead. Most of the time Rustons put the ball in the box there was Liam Clamp and Keaton Spray to clear the danger the pairing were having great games.Gonerby were always going to be a danger on the break and Benjamin Barretto nearly got clear but he was tackled well. All the lads were working so hard to stop Rustons scoring the midfield especially and with 5 minutes to go after soaking up all the Rustons pressure the second goal came as Alex Geeson broke down the left played a perfect ball into the box for Thomas Andersen to finish well.More Rustons pressure followed but still there was no way past our defence as 2 corners late on were cleared well to keep yet another clean sheet for Luke Papworth. The final whistle went and Gonerby had won the Mid Lincs A league this was a great team display from all the lads there 4th game in 8 days and they worked so hard.To win the cup earlier in the season was special but to do the double is a great achievment only 1 defeat in 28 games and we kept 13 clean sheets,Alex Geeson came second in the goalscoring chart with 32 goals a great effort from him but Luke Papworth in goal keeping all the clean sheets gives the team a great base to start.Well done all and i look forward to the awards night in Lincoln.
